Colour Palettes: Cool vs Warm.

Updated: May 10, 2022

When thinking about decorating your home, the first place to start is deciding on your colour palette. This is the fundamental element that is not only going to tie the whole room together but also create your desired atmosphere! In this blog post, I am going to talk through the effects of particular colours and also give you some tips on how to use them to their full potential.

Not only is colour the first thing that people notice when entering a room, but the colours you choose will have a subconscious effect on your emotions - this is called colour psychology!

Cool Colours

Blue: This colour will have a soothing effect so chose blue in spaces where you want to relax. It will also bring a sense of freshness which is why it works so well in a bathroom.

Green: The colour of the outdoors! Green will inspire growth and rejuvenation. Using this colour in your space will bring a sense of balance and tranquility due to the association with nature.

Grey: A grey colour scheme will give your home that classic and sophisticated look. It is a very popular neutral shade for a reason!

Warm Colours

Yellow: Sunshine! This is a gorgeous colour to energise your mood and brighten up a space.

Pink: One of my favourite colours evoking creativity, motivation and also a feminine touch.

Red: Using red will evoke a sense of warmth, passion and stimulate your senses. This is a great colour to give the space a pop of energy. However, I would stay away from using red in spaces where you want to relax.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions I get asked all the time are around how to use more than one colour together and how to match colours within a space.

There are 4 ways in which you can achieve a cohesive look.

1) Neutral with a pop of colour. If you are going for beige as your overall neutral shade, use pops of colour from the warm colour group. Alternatively, if you have chosen grey as your neutral shade, this will match best with cool pops of colour, for example blue.

2) Different shades of the same colour. One way to harmonise the colours in a space and prevent them from becoming overwhelming is to stick to one colour but use different shades of that colour to create depth. For example sage, mint, emerald and sea green are all variations of green that can come together nicely in one space.

3) Warm colours. My recommendation when combining more than one colour is to group warm colours together, such as orange, yellow and red.

4) Cool colours. Again, sticking to a colour group here I would recommend combining blue, green and grey.

Metallic Detailing: Gold or Silver?

When introducing any metallic element to the space, my rule of thumb is to pair gold with warm colors such as red, orange and yellow. Pair silver with cool colors such as green, blue and magenta. Of course there are some exceptions as gold can look amazing paired with cool colours such as green!

Top Tip: Feeling inspired to freshen up your space? Before you paint any walls in your home, download the Dulux Visualizer App. What I love about the Visualizer App is that it uses augmented reality to help you augment paint colours on to your walls instantly.
