The Power of your Home on Mental Health

Creating a home environment that is comfortable, organised and deliberate will make you feel safe and able to relax.

It’s not about how big your place is or how much “stuff” you buy.

Pay special attention to these 4 elements:

1. Soft lighting

My advice in every room is to have a mixture main ceiling lights, wall lights and lamps (either table or floor).

Having the main brighter lights is great when you are performing a task as you need to see what you are doing, e.g. cooking, cleaning, getting dressed. However, switch to softer lights nearer to bedtime as you start to unwind. Don't use your main bedroom light after 8/9pm as you don't want to send mixed messages to your mind thinking this is the time to be active and alert.

Top tip - you can also buy dimmable light bulbs which are really handy.

2. Comfortable seating in the right places

Have you considered the function of each space in your home? For example seating at the entrance of your home for putting shoes on easily. Or choosing a more comfortable sofa for movie nights, think about how long you will spend on your sofa and if you'd happily spend 2+ hours at a time on it. Read this blog for my top Sofa recommendations.

3. Smell

Smell is a powerful tool and it is important to understand the effect of scents when it comes to sleep spaces and living spaces. For example, citrus based are great in the kitchen, and lavender is sleep inducing so ideal in your bedroom.

Also if you haven't taken the bins out or if you have pets do be extra mindful as this will subconsciously affect your mood and comfort levels in a room.

Home fragrance in the form of diffusers and room sprays are a safe way to get evenly distributed scent throughout the day. Read this guide for my home fragrance favourites.

Candles are also great but I am weary about flames that you have to keep a close eye on them.

4. Colours

The colours you choose in your home will have a subconscious effect on your emotions as they will either stimulate or unwind. Consider these carefully when planning your colour scheme. Read this blog post for more on Colour Psychology
